Snow Day

Sometimes God – or, if not God, then some combination of Mother Nature, the school superintendent, and the strange university calendar – wakes you up early with the following message: I’m not sure what you thought you were going to do today, but you should drop it and spend the day in the snow with your family.

And so we did. There was cross-country skiing, until the snow got too sticky. Snowballs were thrown. As the day got warmer, the snow became wetter and more sticky, until we were rolling it up like insulation, leaving the yard bare in big lines. We set out to build an igloo, but ended up with something like the little chapels you see along the roadside in Argentina or in the southwest US…

Three days later, the chapel still stands, though it is a little shorter and leans to the west.
